International Human Rights Day celebrated at the Romanian Academy of Scientists

RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, A FUNDAMENTAL CONDITION OF THE RULE OF LAW

On December 10, humanity celebrates International Human Rights Day. This day is a direct reference to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948, a document that created the framework for the affirmation, promotion and respect of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms worldwide.

On this occasion, the Romanian Academy of Scientists reaffirms the importance of respect for human rights in today’s world, a sine qua non for the rule of law and democracy. AOSR expresses firm belief in the cardinal value for the contemporary world of the vision and principles governing the Universal Declaration, in the importance for any democratic society, for humanity and civilization of the Human Rights enshrined in the document. The AOSR also reiterates its firm commitment to full and unconditional respect, in the letter and spirit of the provisions, of the Human Rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration and in the Romanian Constitution, Title II – Fundamental Rights, Freedoms and Duties.

Within this framework, the Romanian Academy of Scientists underlines the importance of knowledge in society, at the level of all social and professional categories, but especially among the younger generations, of the Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms, by involving schools and universities in an educational work for democratic citizenship, for the formation of informed and responsible citizens, for the further building of a democratic civilization of European essence.

Romanian Academy of Scientists celebrates the Book as a Means of Knowledge

GAUDEAMUS FAIR, A JOY OF SPIRIT, EDUCATION AND CULTURE

On December 4-8, 2024, the 31st edition of the Gaudeamus Book Fair took place, an exceptional event of Romanian culture. The fair, initiated and organized by Radio Romania, took place in Pavilion B2 of the Romexpo Complex. The honorary president of the 31st edition was the writer Mircea Cărtărescu, a leading Romanian author and winner of prestigious national and international awards.

The Gaudeamus 2024 fair brought together over 200 participants, Romanian publishers, including the most important ones, Romanian and foreign book distribution agencies, university publishers, music and educational games distributors. The fair hosted more than 600 events, book launches, debates, meetings with writers, autograph sessions, held in specially designed spaces or at the publishers’ stands. Some were streamed online. The youngest readers, children, were given their own “Ion Creangă” area, in keeping with the tradition of the event.

The Gaudeamus Fair was again this year a privileged setting for books, culture and education through reading. The rich and diverse publishing offer and the large number of visitors, many of them young people, made the event a celebration of books and reading. The joy of the Gaudeamus Fair was amplified by the large number of children, who spent a lot of time at the stands, browsing through books, buying volumes under the guidance of their parents or accompanying teachers, in the magical atmosphere of the printed word and the Winter Holidays.

The Academy of Romanian Scientists was also present at this year’s edition of the Fair through a number of its members who are also authors, some of them prestigious, in various areas of science, research and culture. At the Fair, Prof. dr. Eng. Doina Banciu, president of the Romanian Academy of Scientists, said: “Gaudeamus is a celebration of joy, an encouragement to enjoy books and reading. This is why we are delighted to be present in this chosen space of the spirit, where the elites of culture and science, authors, readers and book lovers meet. We are happy to see many curious children and young people looking for and consulting books at the publishers’ stands. Let us never forget that education is achieved through books and reading, that intellectual, spiritual and moral formation is achieved through access to the ideas, values and teaching of books. Even though we live in the Age of Digital Technology, even though we are witnessing the development of Artificial Intelligence – the fifth Industrial Revolution – books are not losing their importance, but remain, now and always, the essential support for our intellectual and spiritual formation and growth. The book represents, par excellence, our humanity. The Romanian Academy of Scientists, an institution dedicated to education and research, values and celebrates the book as a fundamental means of education and knowledge in a world that develops through knowledge.”

The Romanian Academy of Scientists celebrates Romania’s National Day and underlines the role of education, science and knowledge in the country’s European development and evolution

0

On December 1, the Romanian Academy of Scientists celebrates, together with the entire Romanian nation, Romania’s National Day. National Day is the occasion to honor Romanian history and Romanian becoming, the founding identity values, the sacrifices and sacrifices for existence and continuity, the contribution of the ancestors – people and elites, in a vast national synergy – to the building of a European country, with deep roots in history.

Education, science, culture and knowledge have played a fundamental role in the centuries-long process of building and development of the country. Within this framework, the Romanian Academy of Scientists expresses its deep gratitude to the generations of teachers, professors, scientists and men of culture – many of them martyrs of wars or victims of history – who have contributed through their knowledge and dedication to the uplifting and development of the country in the European spirit.

In this complex framework, for the Academy of Romanian Scientists, Romania’s National Day is the occasion for a deep and responsible reflection on the future of the country and the contribution we can make to the edification of the country in the continuity of the process carried out and completed by previous generations.

The Academy of Romanian Scientists, an emblematic academic institution, founded in 1935, which has contributed to Romania’s development through creative intelligence and scientific creation, is involved through its entire activity, through academic education and scientific research in the process of the country’s development. It is a challenge that the AOSR assumes with responsibility and conscience, engaging all its scientific and creative potential in a complex and difficult process, in a world marked by fundamental changes, through the contribution of digital technology, developed at an unprecedented speed. The National Program “Romania of Knowledge”, initiated by AOSR in May 2024 and carried out with prestigious partners, is designed to contribute to the sustainable development of Romania through education, science and knowledge and aspires to become a true Country Project.

On National Day, December 1st, the Romanian Academy of Scientists wishes Romania and all Romanians, from Romania and abroad, Happy Birthday!
